ACORD-U Frequently Asked Questions

ACORD stands for “Agency for Co-operation in Research and Development”.

Yes, ACORD-U was incorporated in 2018 by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. ACORD-U was later Registered by the National Bureau for Non-Governmental organizations as an indigenous national NGO in February 2019.

ACORD started working in Uganda in 1979 initially as an implementing arm of ACORD International. The process of transitioning ACORD-U to a national Organisation commenced in June 2017 with an interim Board that has since given birth to a Ugandan substantive Board of Directors as well as Policies and Operational guidelines that are contextual to ACORD-U. ACORD-U fully transitioned into a National Indigenous Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in 2019.

ACORD-U operations are majorly funded through grants from Government Agencies, UN Agencies, Embassies, and international NGOs.

ACORD-U provides Life Saving Reproductive Health and GBV Prevention and Care Services for Congolese and South Sudanese Refugees. ACORD-U also provides WASH, Nutrition, and Livelihoods services for the same categories of refugees.

No, by virtue of its registration, ACORD-U is an independent indigenous national NGO. Linkages to other entities are only through partnerships and membership to networks and associations.

ACORD-U’s interventions are mainly focused on the following four broad and interlinked areas.
1. Health, well-being, and access to universal health services including SRHR, HIV/AIDS, WASH, and Maternal Health among others.
2. Sustainable livelihoods, climate change, and natural resources management including aspects of resilience, integrated water resources management, environmental management, and agricultural value chain management.
3. Peace, Justice, and inclusion focusing on GBV prevention and response, gender, and conflict management.
4. Capacity enhancement of ACORD-U and partners, research, and self-sustainability.

Currently, ACORD-U’s interventions are only in Uganda. ACORD-U works in 43 Districts; however, the geographical coverage changes as and whenever new projects are onboarded or completed.

One can join ACORD-U through a formal recruitment and appointment process entailing open advertisement and selection, headhunting, and secondment.

Volunteering with ACORD-U is guided by the ACORD-U policy on voluntary services and must be in line with ACORD-U’s strategic focus. Applications by potential volunteers are received on a rolling basis and acceptance is dependent on the availability of slots for volunteers. ACORD-U does not provide any form of remuneration to volunteers.
